Sprirituality is an essential part of life and it is not synonymous with religion. My view of sprirituality is down-to-earth and practical. Spirituality is something you use in your everyday life and it is irrelevant whether you are an atheist or practicing any religion.

Spirituality is essential in our lives and it is not synonymous with religion.

Spirituality and the soul are obvious and necessary parts of being human. To leave these parts out is like pretending that certain body parts doesn´t exist in the physical universe. It is not possible to achieve personal development at all levels or complete healing without including the entire being. I have a very practical and down-to-earth view of spirituality. It is something you use in your everyday life and to me it doesn´t matter if you are an atheist or practicing any religion.

Meaning and Purpose

My approach is that we are all spiritual beings. Some might perceive this as New Age nonsense. If you ask me, nothing could be futher from the truth. I say it is more nonsensical to ignore what we are seeing and many people today feel a longing for a greater meaning and purpose. Spirituality is, as I see it, an obvious and necessary part in our lives. Many problems in our society today are due to living a "vacuous" life. Spirituality is not dramatic or glamorous. It just is. Like the sun when it rises in the morning.

Is spirituality synonymous with religion?

When the word "spirituality" is being mentioned, a lot of different interpretations arises. Unfortunately, many of them have to do with religion and conflicts. To me, spirituality and religion are two completely different phenomena. My father grew up in a small community in the north of Sweden, an area in which the people wanted little or nothing to do with the church. Understandable enough, since the church for a long time had been a tool which the government used for commanding and oppressing the people. The church had become a symbol for bullying, dogma, hypocrisy and lack of freedom. Spirituality lives everywhere and is absolutely not synonymous to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism or any other religion. This is what I see:

"Imagine two people sitting on either side of a beautiful red rose. The rose doesn´t look the same because they see it from different angels. Imagine now that they start to argue about the way this rose looks. Imagine that they get so upset that they start to shoot at each other with a gun."

Does this sound absurd and crazy? This is exactly what is going on in our world ... right now. Is it time to rise above this - wouldn´t you say?
